Abstract: |
"The photographic body of work 'Thoughts Determine Life' is examined in this paper. The reader is provided with background information on some of the historical developments within staged photography, and how the work is situated within that context. The similarities with other photographers are described along with the literary and philosophical influences that are specific to the images. In this respect, it is mostly the balance between the rational and absurd that is highlighted. However, the human condition in relation to technological and societal developments is also detailed. Finally, the element of humor within the work is discussed in terms of how it aids in communicating the intangible subjects within this conceptual photography." *Includes second PDF with exhibition images Keywords: staged photography, antiphilosophy, existentialism, human condition, Teun Hocks, realism of photography, romantic conceptualism, humor in art, concept sketches |
