Abstract: |
"This thesis intends to be a cross-discipline exploration of the use of video game design technology within education. Specifically, the thesis proposes the design of a stone material decay simulation for use as an active learning activity in a historic preservation curriculum. A significant portion of preservation education revolves around learning to identify material decay in historic sites and monuments in order to keep them well maintained and preserved for future use. The excess variety of different types of decay and the time it can take to become visible makes this a difficult subject to cover thoroughly. The proposed simulation is intended to help students closely observe the process of decay in stone. Thereby letting them explore the roles that different environmental factors play in deterioration and reinforcing their understanding of material decay in conjunction with other teaching methods." *Includes demo of prototype/concept design of marble pedestal tomb decay simulation *Keywords: game design, preservation education, material decay, active learning, simulations in education |
