Abstract: |
"This thesis investigates my re-contextualization of remnants of Western iconic commodities within my memories and myths of childhood in South Korea. In my paintings, I employ grids as ritualistic reliquary, a metaphorical window, and mental fragmentation in repetition. The hybridization of an icon and a grid materializes as a landscape of my mind. My practice of painting reflects a view of metaphysical emptiness and perceptual reductiveness akin to Korean (Eastern) monochrome painting 'Dansaekwha' and Western Minimalism in late-modernist art." Keywords: childhood, remnants, myths, re-contextualization, a window, hybridization, monochrome painting (Dansaekwha) |
