Abstract: |
This written thesis is a companion to my thesis exhibition, consisting of a series of installations and accompanying artist books. In it I discuss historical and theoretical influences that shape the content, form and process of my work. My thesis focuses on the relationship between place and identity by examining the difference between public and private space, how materials stimulate memories of places and who we were in them, and how boundaries can be both havens and prisons, insulating us from outside elements or preventing us from exploring the world. The aim of the thesis is to reveal how identity shapes an individual’s experience in a place as well as how places and associations with their compositions affect an individual’s sense of self - that a person’s identity is an amalgamation of all the places he or she has explored. |
