Abstract: |
The photographic and graphic art series |A|C|G|T| A Genetic Portrait of Family addresses identity, the concept of family, and the ways in which advances in human genetics have had an impact on contemporary art. I explore similarities between photography and science with the broader intent of considering the impact that genetic science has had within contemporary portraiture. The concept of family is more than images collected it is our shared experiences, our environment and the chromosomal unity that binds us together. This exploration of genetics, family, and portrait has resulted in my renewed interest in the representation of memory through photographic evidence. The ability of a portrait to tell a story has been changed and expanded by Genetic Art, and it will continue to have an impact on how I use photography to tell not only my story, but the story of those who came before, who helped mold me into who I am—those whom I call family. |
