Abstract: |
The current state of the built environment in low-income neighborhoods discourages regular physical activity by lacking safe and reliable areas for children to participate in recreational play on a daily basis. While better urban and community planning are essential, graphic design can also contribute through placemaking. A graphic toolkit can establish a strong spatial identity that encourages active living. The application of graphics and strategies for promoting physical activity within the built environment allow for the creation of an experiential landscape that supports daily play among children. Through increased physical activity, the risk of developing childhood obesity can be reduced. As a case study, Montgomery Street in downtown Savannah, Georgia provides insights during the design process that illustrate how the graphic toolkit can be adapted and used in any neighborhood or community to encourage healthy living among children. |
