Most issues of Life had a theme that was introduced by the cover and reflected throughout the issue. Robert Livingston Dickey was born in Marshall, Michigan in 1861. As a young man, found he had a talent for painting animals, especially horses. In 1894, he started working as an artist and writer at Horse Review magazine. He also drew several comic strips for newspapers where dogs were prominently featured and also drew illustrations for advertising. He was a contributor to Life magazine from 1914 to 1930. He died in 1944 Quarter page cartoon. John Ames Mitchell, editor of Life, loved dogs and there were often quite a few dog cartoons. |
