Description: |
Most issues of Life had a theme that was introduced by the cover and reflected throughout the issue. This issue was titled the "War Number." Angus MacDonall was born in 1876 in St. Louis and studied at the Saint Louis School of Fine Art. He eventually migrated east to become part of the Westport, Connecticut, art colony. He was a prolific illustrator, often using humorous, home-spun themes. In addition to working for Life, he also supplied illustrations and covers to Harper's, Scribner's American Magazine, Ladies' Home Journal, and a few covers to Saturday Evening Post. He frequently supplied art for advertising various products, including Jello. He had three beautiful daughters, who worked as models in the illustration world, and were featured in his own work and that of many of his contemporaries. Two page color spread. While World War I had not officially begun, and America would not enter that war officially until 1917, the world was far from peaceful with wars in the Balkans and in Mexico. Americans individually participated in these wars. |
