Life magazine covers were on a variety of topics. Each issue had a theme that was introduced by the cover and reflected throughout the issue.

Albert D. Blashfield was born in 1860. He studied at the Art Students League in New York. He joined the staff of Life in the early 1890's. His art work decorated title pages and advertisements. His most important contribution to Life is the Life cupid. Blashfield was a good friend of John Ames and illustrated several of his books as well as those of other authors. He died in 1920.

One third page cartoon. The first evidence of American children dressing in costumes and and going door to door for food or coins was in 1911, just one year before this Halloween cartoon appeared.
