"This thesis focuses on the re-imagination of costume design for the character Zhora from the movie Blade Runner with special attention paid to the detailed construction. One of the elements that inspired me for this costume was the technique called inkblot, where I analyzed the shapes found on the outside and inside lines from a figure created as result of pressing a paper folded with paint inside. The final costume was made from the use of the draping technique, a three-dimensional technique that consists of making the patterns directly on a dress form. In addition, after a trip to Mexico, I was inspired by wrestling masks and the acute angles, organic shapes and interesting negative spaces that they utilize. The fabrication of these masks also informed my creative decisions. The research could only take place after reading the script completing a character analysis and creating both an emotional response panel and an inspirational moodboard. This thesis will show that the construction of a costume with elaborate techniques can be more attractive to the camera. Aspects like organic and non-organic lines as well as futuristic design mixed with elements from the past can communicate the design, as well as visually connecting with an audience. I built the complete costume for Zhora utilizing the culmination of my educational as well as professional experience." --Abstract
