"The relationship between psychoanalysis and different artists and artistic movements fuels this paper. The psychoanalytic concepts of repression, memory, and the uncanny are foundations for the practices of modern, post-modern painters. This paper focuses on my own work and the philosophical locus in the art of Gerhard Richter, Louise Bourgeois, Jackson Pollock, and Willem de Kooning. Certain art production methods and techniques utilized by these four painters will be analyzed according to their connection with the branch of psychology known as psychoanalysis. This thesis examines unconscious similarities between work made by artists who were undergoing psychoanalytic therapy and the work of artists who were not receiving treatment. My painting process uses engrained psychoanalysis to provide catharsis to my psyche and the viewer's."
