Contemporary information designers find themselves confronted with an ostensibly Sisyphean task— the curation, management, and successful visual composition of an exponentially increasing amount of information. The amount of information suffusing our technological era is growing so quickly that according to Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, humanity now produces in two days more information than it produced in roughly five-thousand years of written history. This is problematic for information designers because they must strive to tell compelling, emotionally resonant, and relatable human stories with data that is increasingly unwieldy, abstract, and impersonal. This thesis proposes one solution to this dilemma. Information designers can make headway in creating information-rich, emotionally compelling, and meaningful data visualizations by using an approach called Experiential Information Design. This approach, which is buttressed by recent findings in human-computer interaction and phenomenology (the study of human consciousness), outlines theoretical principles and actionable tactics that will help designers produce visualizations that enlist viewers as active collaborators in the production of meaning.
