Life magazine covers were on a variety of topics. Each issue had a theme that was introduced by the cover and reflected throughout the issue.

Herbert Merrill was born in New Hampshire in 1864. He studied art at the Cowles School of Art in Boston. He worked as a cartoonist for Harper's Weekly, Harper's Bazaar, Puck, Life, among other magazines and newspapers. He also illustrated numerous books. He died in 1915.

Two page spread. John Ames Mitchell was an animal lover, especially dogs. At that time, medical tests were done on all animals, often dogs, and Mitchell was staunchly against it. Life often ran cartoons that took his viewpoint, and the magazine was often involved in lawsuits. But Mitchell did not back down and often was the winner of these conflicts.
