Description: |
Black and white stereograph image of Savannah, affixed to a gray card with publication information printed on the front and descriptive information on the city and of rice growing printed on the back. Some of the signage on buildings visible in the image include: Jefferson Medical Institute, Jackson & Goodman Dry Goods, R & G Corsets, and E. F Whitcomb. In the Savannah City Directory for 1899, E. F. Whitcomb was listed as a Merchandise Broker located at 30 West Broughton Street. Across the Savannah River, the rice fields of South Carolina are visible. Rice was grown with some success as early as 1680 in the wetlands of the Carolina coast. The plantation owners knew little about rice growing, so they paid a premium price for West African slaves who did know rice culture. It was a labor intensive crop, and after the Civil War, the production of rice diminished. In the 1890's, several devastating hurricanes ruined most of the remaining rice fields and commercial rice production came mostly to an end. The Gullah people are the descendants of the West African slaves who worked on the rice plantations in South Carolina and Georgia. Many still reside in the coastal region of those two states and on the Sea islands, and retain elements of African language and culture. The publisher of this stereograph card was the Keystone View Company, a major distributor of stereographic images, located in Meadville, Pennsylvania. The company began 1892, producing and distributing educational, comic, and sentimental stereograph views and stereoscopes. By 1905 it was the world's largest stereographic company. They also worked with stereoscophalmic equipment for eye training and therapy. In 1963 the department producing stereographic views was closed. Keystone continued to manufacture stereoscopthalmic products as a subsidiary of Mast Development Company. |
