Anton Otto Fischer was born in Germany and orphaned at an early age. He came to America as a deckhand and went on to sail on American ships. He began his art career as a model and handyman for another artist, A. B. Frost. In 1906, he went to the Academie Julien in Paris to study. On returning to the United States, he began studying with Howard Pyle. He began illustrating books and magazines in New York after 1910. He is well known for his seascapes and nautical themes, though he drew a large variety of subjects. He died in 1962.
