Life magazine covers were on a variety of topics. Each issue had a theme that was introduced by the cover and reflected throughout the issue. The cover of this issue was “A Fisher of Men.”

Charles Clyde Squires was born in Salt Lake City in 1882. His father died when he was young and he left school at the age of 13 to be apprenticed to an engraving company that supplied line art for newspaper advertising. He then went to work as a pen and ink artist for the newspaper. He moved to New York to study at the New York School f Art. He published his first illustration for Life at the age of 23, though he continued to study with various illustrators. He is best known for his romantic depictions of the West. He retired from illustration and went on to work in advertising. He died in 1969.

The most common in the United States is Richman, Poorman, Beggarman, Thief, Doctor Lawyer, Indian Chief. In England, the rhyme starts with Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor. The rhyme and its variations are often referred to in literature and music.
