Description: |
Black and white stereograph image of the median of South Broad Street with the double image affixed to orange paper. The back of the card is pink with publication information printed and title information on a paper label pasted on. According to an 1855 map, South Broad Street was the previous name of Oglethorpe Street. The photographer of this image, O. Pierre Havens, was born in Ossining, New York. He moved to Savannah in 1872, opening a photography studio in partnership with J. N. Wilson. He later took over the business from Wilson. In 1888, he relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, where he maintained a studio until his death in about 1912. Like many commercial photographers in America during the late nineteenth century, Havens was as occupied with publishing and marketing his photographs as he was in making them. The stereograph uses two images of a scene taken at slightly different angles to recreate the view seen by the human eyes by adding distance between the images. The stereoscope combines these to provide a three dimensional view. The layered GIF image seen here vibrates a bit, but also combines the two images to provide a three dimensional view without the stereoscope. |
