Description: |
Cabinet card portrait of a bearded man with a jacket and a narrow tie. The information at the bottom of the card where the photographer's name or studio name usually appears is printed "Havens Savannah GA." It is assumed that this would be O. Pierre Havens, who was working as a photographer in Savannah between 1872 and 1888. The image is very dark and somewhat soiled. The back of the card has handwritten information as to the identity of the portrait sitter, and his address, but not the date. The name is not completely legible, but appears to be J. W. Raahm, the address is also hard to read, but appears to be 216 Walberg (Waldberg) Street. The message on the back is commissioning a "first class picture" of this image by J. Wisehart with an agreed on price of $12.00. O. Pierre Havens was born in Ossining, New York. He moved to Savannah, Georgia, in 1872, opening a photography studio in partnership with J. N. Wilson. He later took over the business from J. N. Wilson. In 1888, he relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, where he maintained a studio and was involved with a number of charitable organizations until his death in about 1912. Like many commercial photographers in America during the late nineteenth century, Havens was as occupied with publishing and marketing his photographs as he was in making them. |
