Life magazine covers were on a variety of topics. Each issue had a theme that was introduced by the cover and reflected throughout the issue. This was the "Christmas Number."

Angus MacDonall was born in 1876 in St. Louis and studied at the Saint Louis School of Fine Art. He eventually migrated east to become part of the Westport, Connecticut, art colony. He was a prolific illustrator, often using humorous, home-spun themes. In addition to working for Life, he also supplied illustrations and covers to Harper's, Scribner's American Magazine, Ladies' Home Journal, and a few covers to Saturday Evening Post. He frequently supplied art for advertising various products, including Jello. He had three beautiful daughters, who worked as models in the illustration world, and were featured in his own work and that of many of his contemporaries.
