Color postcard with undivided back and white border on front, postally unused. The bottom border on front is wide and contains copyright information. The Ocean Steamship Company was chartered in 1872 to carry passengers and freight, mostly agricultural products, between Savannah and New York. At the time, it was the only coastwise steamship company to be headquartered in the South. The Savannah Line, as it was called, was a major trade and travel link between Georgia and the North for seventy years. The Savannah Line owned 18 passenger and freight steamers that were considered among the best to be found on the East Coast. The line had three main routes: Savannah-Boston-New York, Savannah-Philadelphia, and Savannah-Fernandina-Jacksonville. The Detroit Publishing Co. operated between 1880s and 1936 out of Detroit, Michigan. The company originally produced religious books and calendars under the name Detroit Photographic Company Ltd., but shifted production in 1897 when owners realized that there was the potential in postcards. They negotiated with a Swiss company and became the sole American company to license a Swiss photochrome process. In 1907, they registered the process under the name Phostint. They improved the quality over the years and did the majority of their printing in Detroit. |
