Abstract: |
Quite often, built environments are created without the consideration of those who inhabit the space, thereby leaving cultural identity and a sense of place unable to form. Meaning, context, and narrative are discounted and the inhabitants are left without a positive relationship to the space and continue to be subjected to an overall negative experience, resulting in an avoidance of the built environment and an escape into the digital. This phenomenon of “placelessness” presents a unique opportunity to visual communicators to transform a lackluster space into a thriving place fit for a specific community. Through the examination of space, place, and the practices of place making and graphic design, this thesis supports the crucial role of graphic designer as place maker. Furthermore, the thesis studies the implementation of a graphic narrative to transform space into place and reinvigorate the relationship between man and the surrounding environment. |
