Anastasia is an animated musical film released by Fox Animation Studios under the direction of Don Bluth and Gary Goldman, in 1997. The story is about Anya, the daughter of Tsar Nicholas, who escapes the assassination plan of her family by the evil Rasputin, but suffers amnesia in the process. The young Anya grows up in an orphanage. Ten years later, she looks for evidence about who she is and meets conmen who suspect she could impersonate the lost Anastasia and wish to cash in on the reward offered by her Grandmother, the Dowager Empress Marie. She also meets Rasputin who does not wish her well. Eventually, she makes her way to Paris with the conmen, manages to defeat the evil Rasputin by crushing his reliquary, and eventually finds love, forgoing her royal heritage to elope with the conman Dmitri.

Concept art containing designs for the reliquary. The Reliquary was a magical object in Anastasia that Rasputin used as an aid to kill the Romanov family. The legend was that Rasputin sold his soul for the power to destroy the Romanovs, and his life is linked to the existence of the reliquary. The object itself has various powers. It contains a mist that can form into demon like creatures who carry out Rasputin’s demands. It also functions as a window that allows Rasputin to spy. The design for the reliquary explored several different ideas, but the final design incorporated a footed glass cylinder with a skull at the top.
