Life magazine covers were on a variety of topics. Each issue had a theme that was introduced by the cover and reflected throughout the issue. The theme of this issue was the state of Texas.

Charles Broughton was born in Canada in 1864 and studied art in Toronto. He later came to New York to study at the Art Students League and the New York Academy of Design. He published drawings of hospitals for Scribner's. He was in the hospital after breaking an arm and had time to sketch. Later, he submitted cartoons to various publications, including Life. In 1927, he moved to California and concentrated primarily on landscape painting. He died in 1945.
