The Naumachia of Nero. A Naumachia refers to a representation of a naval battle among the Romans, and also to the places where such exhibitions took place. The verso of this leaf contains text in three languages with page title in Italian: Naumachia di Nerone. Combatants in the Naumachia sea battles were usually captives and prisoners who were condemned to death. They were divided into to different maritime nations and included gladitorial combat. The emperor could grant clemancy. Nero's Naumachia contained sea monsters in the lake. |
