Description: |
Life magazine covers were on a variety of topics. Each issue had a theme that was introduced by the cover and reflected throughout the issue. This issue was titled "Your best girl number." James Montgomery Flagg was born in New York City in 1877. He was a talented artist and sold his first illustration to St. Nicholas for $10. He began working for Life at the age of fourteen, and did work for other magazines shortly after that. In 1893 Flagg went to the Art Students League and made some friends, but was disappointed with his progress. He tried an art school in London, but concluded that he needed to educate himself. In addition to magazine illustration, he created political posters and painted portraits. Flagg died in 1960. Full page color cover. |
