Life magazine covers were on a variety of topics. Each issue had a theme that was introduced by the cover and reflected throughout the issue. The theme of this issue was books.

Clarence Coles Phillips was born in Springfield, Ohio, and attended school there as well. He moved to New York and took classes at the Chase School of Art. He briefly owned his own advertising studio before he began work as a cover artist for Life and other magazines. He is best known for his “fade away girl” illustrations he created in the 1910s and 1920s. The fade away girl used the device of blending the main figure's dress with the background color. He worked from life and used his wife as a model. The fade away girl became as popular in the 1920s as the Gibson girl had been in the 1900s. He also illustrated many ads of the time period. He died in 1927.
