"As the oldest indigenous religion in China with more than 2000 years of history, Taoism has a tremendous effect on Chinese traditional etiquette, festivals, architecture, music, literature and behavior. Emphasizing living in harmony with the natural universe, Tao influences the behavior of Chinese people as they aspire to find peace and retreat from the noisy world. Harmony, as the ideal ambit of Taoism, is not only expressed in traditional Chinese space but is also largely referenced in western cultures. What aspects of the interior environment can be associated with harmony in modern hotel design? In what ways could Taoist culture and the desire for harmony as a guiding principle influence the usage of materials, colors and forms within the hotel environment? In this thesis study, harmony as a foundation and expression in hotel design is explored."
