"This thesis will address the current issues that Native American elders face today and help to facilitate a local, comfortable and culturally appropriate elder care community in Omak Washington for the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. The current options that Native American elders have for retirement are very limited, and most elders prefer to stay in their homes or with their families. Families are reluctant to place elders far from home and this sometimes results in Native American elders not receiving needed care. Those elders who are placed far from their families often feel isolated and abandoned. This thesis will explore the cultural aspects of the Colville tribe that can be translated into the design of the interior environment of an elder care community that incorporates aspects of hospitality design. By addressing and incorporating the issues of living in remote areas, poverty, and loss of cultural experience, this thesis will provide a prototypical approach to the design of a Native American elder care community."
