Abstract: |
"International Retirement Migration (IRM) is a significant trend around the world and especially in parts of Latin America. While Mexico has attracted foreign retirees for many decades now, the impacts of IRM can also be seen in the social and cultural landscape of cities such as Granada, Nicaragua. As the number of foreign retirees increases in Granada, the focus of this thesis lies in the importance of communal spaces for socialization for both the foreigners and their local counterparts. This study explores the concept of third places introduced by Oldenburg, and current and future socialization needs of local and expat retirees that inform programmatic and design considerations that can be used to better serve the retiree community of Granada. The thesis ultimately proposes an interior design of a communal second place environment that fosters and promotes a place for multicultural social networking between both the foreign and local retirees in the city of Granada."
