Abstract: |
"This thesis discusses representation of gender within Eastern and Western ghost stories, utilizing films from both regions to observe societal, religious and cultural differences. This thesis will also investigate the origin of Japanese folklore art to gain insight on its importance to the Japanese horror genre. By comparing Japanese and American ghost films, this thesis aims to discuss the visual aesthetics of female ghosts in notable examples of the horror genre. The visual component of this thesis will create a visual narrative retelling of 'The Tale of the Peony Lantern,' an infamous Japanese ghost story. By using specific design choices in the character design, the author hopes to subvert the gender roles of the original tale and allow a contemporary interpretation for the audience." Includes the author's original animated short film adaptation of "The Tale of the Peony Lantern," a classic Japanese folktale, a ghost story that tells the tragic tale of two lovers whose love and lives are doomed in the face of social opposition Keywords: character, horror, films, Eastern ghost, Western ghost, representation |
