Abstract: |
"This thesis will examine how I have applied various concepts using reduced sounds that inform my aesthetic and technical choices available via synthetic processing and blending techniques used in contemporary sound design. This work will explore how a SCAD supervising sound editor/sound designer can effectively employ synthetically produced sounds along with selected techniques to create compelling designed soundtracks. I will reference several SCAD animations in my quest to illuminate the intimate and delicate symbiotic relationships between sound effects and musical score." Includes the short film "Three Animations," three SCAD student capstone projects on which the author served as supervising sound editor/sound designer: "Sandcastles" / directed by Gabrielle Leonhard ; the commercial "Shapeshifter" / a charlex film ; and "Doll Story" / directed by Zandria Ross. The author used sound to convey the overarching or driving idea or emotion behind each film: transformation and triumph; confidence and power; horror and playfulness. Keywords: sound effects, sound design, reduced listening, experimental scores, synthesizer, musique concrète, sound theory terminology |
