"This thesis will analyze articles which address the culture of rape and the church in African American communities similar to the one depicted in the thesis script 'Muda Wa Wakati,' which translated from Swahili means Time’s Up. These articles convey the urgency of this issue, and also tackles the thematic questions posed in the film. This thesis will examine five notable films similar in their cinematic elements to 'Muda Wa Wakati,' to help prove there is a marketable audience for these types of stories. More importantly, these five films show the delicate balance that must be in place to approach and harness this sensitive subject of sexual assault. The supporting films are: 1. 'The Color Purple,' 2. 'Eve’s Bayou,' 3. 'For Colored Girls (Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf),' 4. 'No! The Rape Documentary,' and 5. 'Moonlight.'"

Includes the author's screenplay "Muda Wa Wakati" (time's up' in Swahili), about a twelve-year-old African American girl, Muhoozi, who seeks to avenge her cousin Oneka’s suicide by exposing the pastor that raped her.--Description from thesis text
