"This project deals with sustainable development of the Yujiapu area and Lanjing Island, which is supposed to be created as a prototype for the city or country wide. Yujiapu is located in the eastern part of Tianjin, China, and close to the Bohai Sea. This site is part of the Binhai New Area and it is proposed as the primary development area of a potential world financial center by the Tianjin government. To achieve the goal, almost all the buildings were demolished, and local people had to move to other areas in 2007. However, there are two issues plaguing this area that should be addressed, which make it not an ideal site to only focus on financial development. Flooding and environmental pollution make this area unsuited for potential world financial center status. The unpleasant environment does not have enough charm to attract people to relocate. Additionally, it is hard to compete with Beijing Financial Street, which is the core financial center in northern China, and is really close to this site. To revitalize this area and achieve sustainable development, people need to rethink the development’s orientation. This project addresses its ecology issues first: developing the waterfront and infrastructural corridor in harmony with the sustainability of natural systems and the environment, relieving the flooding and pollution problems, and creating an inviting and safe place for people to visit. In addition, cultivating a sustainable economic environment via landscape infrastructure is the secondary goal. The project will create a livable and desirable place through land use strategies and transportation connections to the surrounding context, bringing new life to the neighborhood, in order to support regional development."
