Description: |
Color postcard with linen texture, no border and divided back, postmarked with an unreadable date. Caption from back: "General Oglethorpe Hotel and Golf Club, Savannah GA. J. B. Pound Pres - Chas. G. Day, Vice - Pres. J. B. Temple, Manager Other J. B. Pound Hotels: Hotel De Soto Savannah, Ga; De Soto Beach Hotel Savannah Beach, Ga.; Hotel Seminole Jacksonville, Fla.; Hotel Patten Chattanooga, Tenn." The General Ogelthorpe Hotel was built on Wilmington Island, Savannah, Georgia in 1926-27 and opened to the public in October, 1927. The architects were Schultz and Weaver and the design is reminiscent of the Nautilus Hotel in Miami with its 4 radiating wings. It was clad in white stucco and had red tile roofs with a Spanish architectural style. While the dining room and ballroom/lounge areas were opulent, the rooms were plain. The golf course was designed by Donald Ross and the river side of the property featured an enclosed swimming pool with pavilions on either end. The property was converted into condominiums and is operated under the name of Wilmington Plantation Condominiums. This postcard was produced by the Curt Teich & Company. They utilized a variety of processes but the most common was a halftone lithographic process. They had elaborate numbering systems for their postcards. The numbers also often designated production processes. This card is unusual in that there are no identification numbers. |
