Life magazine covers were on a variety of topics. Each issue had a theme that was introduced by the cover and reflected throughout the issue. This issue was the "Valentine Number." Albert D. Blashfield was born in 1860. He studied at the Art Students League in New York. He joined the staff of Life in the early 1890's. His art work decorated title pages and advertisements. His most important contribution to Life is the Life cupid. Blashfield was a good friend of John Ames and illustrated several of his books as well as those of other authors. He died in 1920. Slightly smaller than one quarter page cartoon. This issue made full use of the Life cherub. |
