Currently, one billion people live in slums. It is projected that by 2030, there will be two billion slum dwellers. Thus, I ask this question: Is there a consistent language of architecture that is affordable and amendable to slum dwellers that provides basic needs without a negative cogitation (without means, dirty, rejected, outcast, chaotic, and informal)? Why is there such a stark contrast between the wealthy and poor (a growing divide) in most of Latin America? What was the idea utopian large scaled governmental projects which attempted to address these issues, and why did they fail? What could I offer a barrio (slum) society where the vernacular style is generated from the communal stewardship of resources?
