This thesis explores the effects of the theories of biophilia, color theory, and restorative environmental theory; have on improving the experience of veterans with mental illnesses while receiving treatment in psychiatric care facilities. It aims to demonstrate how implementing principles of selected theories into a mental health care facility will improve the patient experience by evaluating existing VA hospital psychiatric ward design. Through the investigative processes of a review of relevant literature, case studies, precedent analysis, surveys, and interviews, a psychiatric care interior design model will be developed that responds to patients need for improved health care facilities.

This thesis investigates the contemporary stress factors created by four diverse generations (Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y) in the American office. Each generation has varied work-style and workplace preferences that need to be recognized in an office environment. Using restorative interior design approaches, this thesis explores the design of interior environments as a catalyst to reduce stress and improve successful communication in today’s generationally integrated workplace. Investigative tools utilized for data collection include a literature review, case study analysis of existing workplace environments, employee surveys and industry professional interviews. This investigation provides the foundation for the development of a prescriptive set of interior design guidelines. These guidelines emphasize in-depth applications utilizing restorative design principles. These principles impact the innate attributes of human-nature and are used as part of a multifaceted solution to increase successful communication and reduce stress in current and future generationally diverse work environments.

This thesis is an exploration of how simple click interactions can be used to create more engaging gameplay in the context of casual online games. This thesis focuses on breaking down the elements of simple click interactions, documenting the elements, and using them in the context of a larger game. In and of themselves, these interactions are abstract representations of the basic interaction the user will have with a program. However these interactions are always put into an analogous context and the restrictions that the applied theme provide generate the result. Thus the same click combination carries different meanings based on the analogy that the designer is attempting to achieve and the modulating factors which are applied to the interaction. The aim was to provide designers with a basic toolset with which they can abstract an idea and communicate it effectively within this context. Furthermore, this thesis suggests an avenue of exploration from which others will be able to build out the toolset for their specific needs.
