This study intends to improve the livelihood of the elderly through architecture and the built environment. In studying the changes that occur in the human mind throughout the aging process, along with increasing physical limitations and how one’s immediate surroundings affect this process, this study will contrive an improved method of design for residential communities to help alleviate some of the difficulties burdening the aging population in this country.

In developing a community, it is crucial to create a place that is aware of its natural landscape and can support and encourage its inhabitants “to achieve wise use of the land and water resources… giving full consideration to ecological, cultural, historic, and aesthetic values, as well as the needs for a compatible economic development”. The implementation of thoughtful design, advanced building technologies, and the ability to interact with the surrounding environment, without significant impact, should be the minimal standard for development. More specifically, the challenge of creating principles toward a prototypical solution for a sustainable, permanent, and mixed-use living community while trying to manage the ever-increasing population in a sensitive and limited environment remains unchanged. The inherent need to better understand the coastal environment, as well as how to incorporate better building practices and standards continues. The outcome of this project will produce a new archetype for a sustainable, permanent mixed-use living complex in Charleston, South Carolina. It will provide a precedent for the field of architecture in mixed-use living developments along the coast, resulting in an improved sense of place - a model of sustainable, urban living for the future of its coastal inhabitants.

This thesis focuses on nonprofit organizations’ need for strong graphic design and illustration, and potential solutions to help them achieve their visual communication goals. After describing the relevance of my nonprofit experience and illustration portfolio to the nonprofit market, I assess the feasibility of establishing a design and illustration studio that both serves nonprofit markets, and is itself a registered 501(c)3 organization. I explore several different funding models, and propose a marketing plan.

"Currently, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is seen purely as a childhood disorder, and little research has been done about those individuals transitioning from childhood to adulthood. With an estimated 200,000 students with ASD expected to enter college in the next few years, giving these students the resources they need to succeed has become a pressing issue. Because ASD can affect an individual’s ability to communicate and deal with executive functions, college presents many more challenges than doing well in courses. The overwhelming sensory inputs of a college campus could potentially be creating environments that are difficult for students with ASD to navigate. Armed with the knowledge that an environment can affect young children with ASD, the question now becomes about how to support adolescents with ASD in the spaces where they transition into adulthood, like college campuses. Therefore, the intent of this research is to identify environmental factors which may directly affect behavioral responses from college students with ASD, and determine how this knowledge can be applied to the design of interior spaces on a college campus."
