ACA Library Artist's Book Collection
The SCAD Library in Atlanta includes a permier collection of over 2,100 artists' books. Artists' books are works of art that experiment with the potential of the book. The genre includes immense diversity in shape, medium, and content. SCAD's collection contains unique works by individual artists as well as small editions and items from fine arts presses. The collection is unusual in its variety; it includes works from more than 1,000 artists and has a deep holding of books ranging from the 1960s through contemporary works. An especially unique aspect of SCAD's collection is the group of Nexus Press books, which is the largest of its kind. Nexus Press was a fine arts press in Atlanta that was in production from 1973-2003.
Exposure
The value of the SCAD collection was recognized early in 2008 by the receipt of a grant from The Halle Foundation. This grant funded a student exchange with a prominent fine arts university, Braunschweig University of the Arts, in Germany and an exhibition of the collection.
The library hosts an annual Artist's Book Symposium which includes lectures, presentations, and workshops related to the study of book arts. In conjunction with the symposium, the library holds an annual Student Artist's Book Competition. Participating students have the opportunity to win one of three purchase prizes and be entered into the permanent collection.
SCAD's philosophy has always been that the Artist's Book collection is a teaching collection. The library offers subject specific classes each quarter to a wide variety of majors. Students, faculty, and the public can make appointments to visit the collection, handle the items, and in doing so gain inspiration for their own creative projects.

Magpies is a counting book by SCAD student Lauren Agne. It won Third Place in the 6th Annual Juried Student Artist's Book Competition. The juror was Margot Ecke of Smokey Road Press in Athens, GA. Screenprinted on both sides with magpies and feathers.

Pages, attached to shadow box and board, are two continuous strips back-to-back, folded accordion style. Three lift-up flaps reveal further dune details. Board and shadow box covered in blue cloth. "These dunes are located in the Oregon Dunes National Recreational Area near Coos Bay. The font is named appropriately Sand. The paper is Hahnemühle Buga. John Hastings, introduction: "The language in Shakespeare's plays has stood the test of time, but could it survive a translation into text messages by a modern teenager? Unique book housed in an antique film canister. The book is made with handmade paper and the text is typewritten. Hamrick's text is a mixture of personal stories set in Georgia, and music lyrics with sexual innuendos involving music music lyrics. The stories are told by a progressively older narrator, and is a kind of coming of age book, or self-portrait with a written soundtrack.

Savannah College of Art and Design owns edition number 31/90. Signed by the author/book artist. "Explores the importance of memories and how they continually evolve. Eight memories are described; one on each double page spread with Lori's account consistently on the right page, her sister's on the left. The main details of the story are told in a square that pops out in the middle of the page spread, while peripheral information fills the rest of the page. The image of both sisters, surrounded with textural collage, are revealed throughout the book by the die cuts of the pop up page. The structure of the book reflects the relationship between two sisters who spring from the same environment."--Women's Studio Workshop website.
