This thesis is comprised of a case study of the wood block floor restoration at the Georgia State Railroad Museum (formerly the Central of Georgia Railway Roundhouse Museum) in Savannah, Georgia. This case study presents a brief history of the complex, an as-built assessment, and a detail of the restoration process of the flooring system. The document also seeks to provide recommendations concerning protocol to be used during the maintenance of the flooring system. In addition, another example of historic wood block was examined and compared to the subject flooring system in order to exhibit another historic use of the material.

With the main focus on Asian Indian immigrants seeking the comfort of their history and culture in the United States, this thesis has tried to find a bond between two cultures. By investigating similarities between textile traditions from both of the countries, a familiarity has been revealed. This thesis paper looks at Indian sari design patterns and American quilt design patterns as the media of the cultural familiar to the respective countries. The thesis studies the history and traditional importance of these two textiles in their individual cultures. The paper emphasizes the idea of hybridization, which will bring the positive familiar between both Asian Indian and American communities to live and share the process of acculturation by understanding the cultures and traditions of each other.

This thesis looks at the vessel as an object that exists both for aesthetic and for specific functional purposes, such as shelter. While exploring the form of the vessel and its meaning, I was inspired by the work of contemporary fiber artists such as Kay Sekimachi, Jane Sauer and Marcia Widenor. The precise interlacing of materials they use lends itself to the creation of complex contours as seen in hanging birds’ nests. Based on my research of hanging fiber nests created by both humans and birds, it is apparent that the latter use weaving methods that humans similarly consider when building their own nests. Birds have also been observed to pay attention to the aesthetic value of the materials they choose for nest building – not just the functional or comfort values. Applying this knowledge to the loom, I create structures that display the architectural characteristics of a timeless vessel.

"This thesis is an excerpt from a novel. It's about a young man named Auden Bryce returning to his home in a small Georgia town after being gone for five years. Upon returning, he's faced with the memories and relationships he left behind, as well as the pent-up grief over his mother's death which sparked his moving in the first place. As he explores his home and navigates these relationships as an adult, he hopes to reconnect and gain closure for the life-and love-he left behind." --Abstract
