Collection of theses from 2010 and later
This database houses the graduate thesis work completed at all SCAD locations from fall 2010 forward. It is keyword searchable and includes both written and visual components, giving the user a broader understanding of both product (digitized studio work) and its underlying concept (the written thesis). The goal of the database is to provide both aspiring MFA candidates timely models of what a graduate thesis should address, and the larger public a sense of the richness of graduate work done at SCAD. Questions regarding this database should be directed to the Visual Resources Center library@scad.edu.

Medical illustration serves as the visual intermediary between scientific data and the audience. The goal of the medical illustrator is to convey anatomical and scientific information in an accurate, yet visually enticing manner. Because medical illustration is a visual art, artistic license can play a significant role in the success or failure of an illustration as a pedagogic means.

Perception is “the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses.”(1) With the current advances and globalization, the world has become a smaller place where almost everything is accessible. Sources of information are at everyone’s reach, whether by the use of internet or the media. Therefore, perception could be gathered from what is seen on the TV, heard on the radio or read on the internet. Not to disregard all these mediums, but in order to get an even closer source of information, one must conclude from his/her own sensory experiences.

Preservation revolving funds are widely accepted as effective tools used to save endangered properties and encourage the revitalization of deteriorating historic neighborhoods. This thesis focuses on how visual tools can be utilized to market revolving fund properties and provides recommendations for the creation of measured drawings that can be easily manipulated for use in promotional materials. Past and current marketing techniques were analyzed in order to develop three distinct strategies, addressing the varying needs of revolving funds. Through the creation of measured drawings and renderings of a revolving fund property located in Savannah, Georgia, this thesis demonstrates the application and potential impact of each strategy. Measured drawings can be used in the rehabilitation and future maintenance of the property, while architectural renderings can be used to depict the building’s potential. The combination of both types of drawings makes the property more marketable, both as a realistic rehabilitation project and a component of a greater neighborhood revitalization initiative.

This thesis focuses on a architectural solution for the culture rehabilitation of the people of the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans, Louisiana. The proposition for a cultural center is crucial. Therefore, the most affective way to initiate such a concept is to lend from what they already had, Jazz music. Since New Orleans is a catalyst for the birth of Jazz, it will provide a focus for such a cultural center. Furthermore, the thesis focuses on the history of jazz, creating a timeline of different genres throughout the site. The cultural center is not intended to be limited to a gathering place, but a place that also educates, and entertains. The thesis exhibits these possibilities of different spaces that accomplish community and civic pride. Therefore, the appreciation of the Lower Ninth Ward is fully captivated and affective to the spirit of its people.
