For women in prisons, the condition is worse because the number of crime population is much smaller than men but they increase rapidly; therefore, many women prisons are overcrowded. However, 85% of women prisoners are non-violent; most of them are prostitutes, stealing or hustling as necessary for their survival or for their children because jobs are rare and welfare is impossible to live on. So, how to punish or sentence to imprisonment those who are victims of social oppression is a crucial issue and argument in modern society and civilization. California Institution for Women was a pioneer of women’s prison history: the only women prison during the 1960’s in California. However, after 30 years, not only the prisoners’ population increased dramatically but also penal policy was influenced politically. The sentence became longer, the reformed way is harder, the behavior of inmate is changed, the relationship between inmates and staffs are different, and the condition of prison is getting worse. Therefore, my dedication of architectural design is to create another new institution across the CIW, which has a more humanized, friendly, green space with sufficient natural light, efficient supervise, parenting and children programs, variety vocational programs for victims of social oppression, and more flexible space program to solve the intensive population of women prison to be an experiment and model of women prison.
