"Various filmmakers throughout history have explored the lonely female figure in cinema, however she is not likely to be found at the local multiplex or as often as her male counterpart. Using a variety of resources and historical contexts, I will identify the lonely female figure in the work of Barbara Loden and Kelly Reichardt. Upon close examination of these filmmakers and their first feature films, I will compare and contrast style, performances, camera techniques, environment and identity found in the female figure, while also discussing production elements of Loden’s 'Wanda' (1970) and Reichardt’s 'River of Grass' (1994), taking into account how each narrative reflects the socio-economic circumstances of women during the time it was made. I will further investigate the history of women behind the camera, specifically taking into consideration the background of these specific creators as it applies to the context of their work. Additionally, I will consider how box office and critical success have impacted their ability to make film. I will argue that the cultural significance of the lonely female figure as seen through the gaze of these women is critical, not only to the development of cinema history, but also to the current political climate of the film industry."
