Abstract:	This thesis is concerned with the conceptual overlaps between mid-twentieth century title designs by Saul Bass, Maurice Binder and Pablo Ferro and the theoretical proposals advanced by typographer Jan Tschichold and color theorist Johannes Itten. Their work allows for a systematic description of overlaps between traditional Modernist graphic design and the emerging field of film title design that took shape after the critical success of Saul Bass’s design for The Man With The Golden Arm in 1955.
