This thesis is an investigation into the relationship between light and health, and how architecture can be used as a medium to stimulate the healing process. The specific user group for this project was those diagnosed with musculoskeletal diseases, a group of diseases that currently have no proven medical cure. With emphasis on the human experience through materiality and building systems, this thesis aims to drastically alter the negative connotation that exists with musculoskeletal treatment facilities and to raise awareness about the power of alternative and complementary “medicine” for these diseases.

There exists in comics a long tradition of artists who attempt to use their medium as a means to persuade their readers. Comics with the intent to persuade must absorb the reader with subtle, strong characters and an engaging narrative in order to be taken seriously, and, in effect, to be successful as tools for potential change. Jack T. Chick is one of the most well known practitioners of persuasive religious comics. However he fails to provide these essential elements. Through examining his work and its mistakes, one can better understand what makes a successful persuasive comic.

Rises in energy rates, global economic crisis, global warming, apprehension for the planet and our future generations are vast concerns for general population. Puerto Rico suffers from all of the previous issues mentioned, but also lacks the sustainability and the spread of this knowledge in the population; which could minimize some of the impacts of the crisis the world and specifically the island is going through. A lot of spaces designated for the interaction of people have been closed or removed, affecting the cultural aspect of socialization. Working with these issues while implementing architecture, design and sustainability into a cultural and social building that becomes a teaching tool by the interaction of environment and user is what is intended to be achieved in this project. A solution to a sustainable concern in the island of Puerto Rico is introduced through architecture in a multi-functional building that responds to site and public interests, it also serves as a device for learning about technological possibilities by implementing not only solar, tidal and wind power but also interactive sustainable features that are functional and serve to enhance education though social interaction. Achieving a zero energy building is difficult but not impossible. The amount of sources required to produce the energy the building would consume are really high, especially because the building will be working throughout 24 hours. The energy needed to achieve functionality of the building is high enough as to be impossible to apply technologies only in the infrastructure of the building. Additional energy generating technologies were implemented in the site and surroundings in order to meet energy requirements.

Throughout history, street vending has served as a major source of exchange and commerce. This practice has help to secure the livelihood for many citizens of developing countries. Similar to their business counterparts situated in permanent locations, street vending is a major financial force that keeps many national and local economies vibrant, while helping to foster significant social change. These factors corroborate the knowledge that although not fully recognized in some places, and at times frowned upon; the status of street vending does not render its societal importance any less vital than other economical or social systems. This system is most evident in the city of Lagos, Nigeria. Nigeria’s financial Capitol Lagos, is perpetually plagued by the inadequate infrastructure needed to accommodate the system of street vending. Therefore, this system places unusual mandates on leaders to accommodate the vendors, and their customer’s avid demand for services.

At 6,426 people per km2, Hong Kong boasts the most densely populated urban center in the world. The reality of sustainable practices, depletion of resources and a shifting global power paradigm pervade media involving China, and its Western syndicate territory, Hong Kong. By making imagery here, I ask viewers to contemplate these issues, but to also see these places as homes; not statistics. As the living cities and infrastructure that address cultural standards and progressive technologies. These photographs do not propose a reality so different from the spin of contemporary media, but asks an audience on the other side of the world, the Western world, to reflect on whether these images provide a surrogate for wonderment or trepidation for a changing global climate and future.

This thesis is intended to celebrate the history and culture of the Bahamas through architecture. Specifically, through the development of a “cultural market” located in downtown Nassau. The primary objectives of the cultural market are to: (1) draw tourists into the local community; (2) educate tourists and local residents about the history and culture of the straw market and Junkanoo, (3) train local residents in the art of traditional Bahamian craftwork and (4) provide a source of entertainment for tourists and local residents. This cultural market will create active public spaces bringing people from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds together, and showcase the arts and culture of the Bahamas to the world. Moreover, this cultural market will spark the renewal of downtown Nassau thereby enhancing surrounding real estate values, creating new business opportunities and most importantly, bringing money into the local economy.

The graphic design industry is efficiently connected through platforms in new media. This connectivity perpetuates a dense community of sharing, critique and discourse that actively defines the contemporary graphic design zeitgeist. With the connectivity that the internet provides, discussions have become seemingly democratic, giving all participants a voice. However, new network systems that facilitate inequality have begun to grow in popularity. These networks decrease the democracy that the internet was built upon, reducing the voice of the graphic design community to a select few. By engaging with graphic design discourse on-line, the field can move from monologue to dialogue as it evolves in practice.

Quite often, built environments are created without the consideration of those who inhabit the space, thereby leaving cultural identity and a sense of place unable to form. Meaning, context, and narrative are discounted and the inhabitants are left without a positive relationship to the space and continue to be subjected to an overall negative experience, resulting in an avoidance of the built environment and an escape into the digital. This phenomenon of “placelessness” presents a unique opportunity to visual communicators to transform a lackluster space into a thriving place fit for a specific community.

Information technologies such as the World Wide Web have contributed to a “cut and paste” culture that is redefining the notion of originality and authorship within the creative/design communities. The terms are less absolute, as the lines between influence, appropriation, parody, pastiche and plagiarism are becoming increasingly less clear. Though these technologies are advancing the field of graphic design by facilitating a global cross-pollination of ideas and techniques, it is their complicity in copyright infringement that is quietly undermining these advancements, threatening the integrity of the profession.

The “feminization of poverty” is a phenomenon that affects every sector of Uganda’s society. The traditional cultural construct deprives women of their rights to develop into selfsustaining entrepreneurs. The past civil wars and AIDS have decimated a large portion of the population, leaving many destitute widows and children. As much as the current government of Uganda has made a significant effort in turning the war torn economy around, it is apparent that land ownership, as well as traditional expectations, continue to create an imbalance in the social construct of the culture. The majority of the women engage in sustainable enterprises such as basket weaving, mushroom growing and accessory product design by reusing waste materials and using eco-friendly farming methods. There is a marketable surplus of their products unfortunately; they have yet to find a market for them. This study, therefore, will illustrate the current welfare of Ugandan women, their unfortunate societal conditions influenced by gender inequality, as well as the untapped potential that they have as self-sustaining entrepreneurs. The research will also show that designing an effective distribution system will give the women the ability to market their products more effectively, thereby alleviating them from the vicious cycle of poverty.

This thesis examines the play selection process for creating a theatre season and applies the methodology of multiple attribute decision making matrices in order to balance the need for artistic expression and patronage. Systems for theatre season planning are not taught and theatre administrators are left to create their own or navigate the process uniquely each year. In order to identify common participants in the theatre season selection process, ascertain approaches that are often employed, and enumerate factors that are considered when choosing a season, a random sample (n=200) was selected from a list of 504 nonprofit theatres in the US. Respondents included artistic directors, technical directors, costuming supervisors and marketing directors. Survey results showed that the decision makers and processes for season planning vary greatly from company to company. Data revealed that many factors drive this decision making process, which include, but are not limited to, a responsibility to a mission statement, regional interests, or a commitment to producing new works. The analysis of the data culminated in the application of a multiple attribute decision making matrix, or multi-attribute evaluation. Using this customizable tool, criteria for a successful season can be weighted and applied mathematically to each possible work being considered for production in order to create a ranking of options for a well-balanced season. This method can be used by committees as well as individuals and can assist in creating a theatre season that encourages an approach of values based patron support.
