Given time, people will develop technology to a sufficient level to change humans completely in body, mind, and possibly spirit. This transformation may be fantastically advantageous or terribly dangerous, but as technology continues to improve, its impact on men and women – both as individuals and as a collective society – will become increasingly comprehensive. By studying the concepts of transformation and augmentation as they have been historically observed by authors and artists, and by analyzing the speculation of contemporary futurist thinkers, one can gain a fuller understanding of the ways in which the transhumanist vision has always been an essential aspect of mankind’s collective identity.
